» MEXICO CITY TO THE SILVER CAPITAL

JUNE 19, 2003

We decided to take a break from the buses and hotels and rented a little house on the Caribbean island of Roatan for the month of May. It had pristine beaches and excellent SCUBA diving.

Honduras' capital city is Tegucigalpa and it was the cleanest city we have been to so far. They even had little VW beetle police cars (right).

There were plenty of sailboats moored up off the island of Roatan. Who knows how long they have been there for there was no reason to leave. The bar to the right, Eagle Rays, was THE place to see the sun set.

This was main street on West End...pure sand. You can see the blue water peeking through the trees on the left side of the photo. Everyone would stroll down here at sunset to find a beachside bar.

Our favorite place was the Twisted Toucan where we would get...well, twisted, on the great MonoLocos and Jamaican-me-crazys. The waitresses would pour standing shots from the bar into your open mouth. So, it was a good thing it was a sandy road we walked home on.

Hey Mario!

The Mystery of the Bojangles Boxes

There were no malls or McDonalds on the island, but we kept seeing boxes of Bojangles chicken on the side of the road and in our street garbage bins. We finally found there was a Bojangles restaurant next to the airport that actually had "Carolina BBQ" on the menu! Go Carolina!

YABA DING DING

(definition from the island museum)

"Yaba ding ding" is a colorful term, which may be unique to the Bay Islands. Some islanders use it to signify any Pre-Columbian artifact, but it is usually reserved for the great quantity of detached supports or adornments of the Cocal period ceramic vessels, which abound here."

I just like to say "yaba ding ding".

We went SCUBA diving almost every other day. Comparing it to the places we have dove around the world, it was some of the best! Anthony's Key Resort down the road had a dolphin pen that was popular place to visit.

Horse and wagon was the local "taxi service" at the airport in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. We stopped here to change planes before our flight to Miami. We headed home at the end of May to North Carolina to prepare for our upcoming trip to South America this summer.

We had to spent the night in Miami where Brian had the pleasure of drinking water straight from the tap...something we haven't done in more than six months.

Another odd pleasure was being able to throw our paper products directly in the twa-let. The plumbing wasn't strong enough for such additions in pretty much all of Central America. We took this picture of our toilet in Miami because it was the first time in a while we have seen the absence of a small waste basket beside the commode.

Brian felt that there weren't enough pictures of me in our updates. So he took it upon himself to do a little documentary of his own...unbeknownst to me...thus created, this in-depth look at the many faces of Rachel's sleeping. grrrr.

So, after a couple weeks back in the states, we are now in Ecuador preparing for our summer journey. We will be leading adventure programs with Broadreach for teenagers through Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. We plan to do some of our own traveling in Peru before the kiddies arrive. Keep posted for more updates!
